Electricity accounts for almost 80% of energy costs for commercial buildings.

In addition to the energy and costs saved by using more efficient lighting there are also important secondary effects from lighting. Due to the heat generated by internal sources such as lighting, people and equipment most commercial premises will require some form of cooling system. The additional air conditioning load created by offsetting heat from electric lighting can add a further 20% to the electricity use attributed to inefficient lighting. In some cases the additional air conditioning load for some buildings in summer months is simply used to cool the heat generated by inefficient lighting.
